Track Magazine Paper Archives Those readers who were around in the early part of this decade and before have fond memories of the paper version of Track Magazine. While most local high school CC and Track results weren't computerized back then the magazine was packed full of great photos and articles, all by Buzz Thom who was a one-man show. Buzz Thom published the first paper issue of track magazine on September 23rd 1994 (Vol I, Number 1) and was delivered to each school and distributed at major invites continuously until it became cost and time prohibitive after the 1996 Cross Country league finals (Vol III, Number V- November 22nd 1996). During that last season I asked Buzz if he wanted me to start putting results and selected articles on the web. This was the start of the web version of Track Magazine. If you check out the Archives (this page specifically) the 1996 Cross Country preview is the same as published in that last issue and the season Wrap-Up was on the web only. Buzz continued to keep stats and contribute to the web version during the next two seasons (1997 CC and Track) but that year (1997) had no paper version of the magazine except for a brief co-production with Competitor Magazine (one issue) called “High School Competitor” that was distributed at the 1997 Mt. SAC and Jaguar invites. Then in 1998 Movin’ Shoes stepped-in to assist with the funding and for several years the San Diego Track and Cross Country community had both the paper and web versions. During spring track this year (2009) I asked Buzz if he still had all the old issues for me to scan (photograph, actually) and put on Track Magazine. He said it’d take some time to find them all but he’d get them to me. Then at the CIF Cross Country finals he showed up with a box that’s complete from the first issue through the 2001 Cross Country season. He said there’s about 20 more that he’d put-together so I don’t have a definitive date for the last issue but I’m sure that I’ll eventually get them all. Here is the first Issue published September 23rd 1994 --- many more to follow
